Philip Ward is Full Professor of Global Water Risk Dynamics at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He is the Head Department of Water Climate Risk, and leads a team of 60 international researchers working on water, climate, disaster risk, adaptation, and muti-risks. He gained his BSc degree in Geography at the University of Manchester in 1999, his MSc degree in Environment and Resource Management at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2005, and his PhD at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2005. His current research focuses on multi-hazard risk assessment and management. In the last few years, Philip and his team have developed innovative approaches to better understand the interlinkages between different risk elements, as well as methods to assess the effectiveness and feasibility of disaster risk reduction strategies. His research fuses high-level scientific impact with key societal questions, and searches for solutions to global environmental challenges. He is currently adviser to 15 PhD students.
